What is Global Mission?

Global Mission is the frontline mission arm of Adventist Mission, an office of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s world headquarters. Since 1990 Global Mission has established new congregations in previously unreached areas of the world. These include everything from a North American suburb with no Adventist presence to an entire country in the 10/40 Window—a region stretching from West Africa to the Far East, which is home to many of the world’s major religions, relatively fewest Christians, and fast growing cities.

Last year Global Mission supported nearly 1,500 church planting projects in unentered areas at a cost of nearly $18 million. Since 1990 pioneers have established more than 11,000 new Seventh-day Adventist congregations.

Global Mission projects start as local initiatives. They involve sponsoring laypeople, called pioneers, who volunteer at least one year to establish a new congregation within their own culture. Pioneers have the advantage of understanding the community, speaking the local language, and blending with the local people and often cost far less than traditional cross-cultural missionaries.

Just as Jesus sent out the first disciples to preach, teach, and heal the sick, Global Mission's frontline workers reach out to the needs of people. Pioneers share the good news through a holistic ministry including: caring for the sick, running literacy programs, holding evangelistic meetings, and giving Bible studies.

What is Global Mission's central work?

Although it's important to maintain and support existing missions and institutions, this isn't Global Mission's role. Global Mission supports local initiatives for frontline ministry in unentered areas--and helps involve all church departments in this task.

How long does a typical Global Mission project take?

Global Mission has learned that short-term projects don't usually give long-term results. Establishing a new church in a new area can take three to five years of support.

Global Mission Study Centers

Charles Taylor, one of the architects of Global Mission, once visited Egypt and was overwhelmed by the relative handful of believers after 100 years of Adventist work. "It's time we stop banging our heads against the door," he said, "and take time to find the combination to the lock."

In response to this kind of need, Global Mission has set up study centers around the world. These study centers explore ways to build bridges of understanding with major world religions in order to more effectively share Jesus' love with all people groups. So far these centers have built some 25 new models for reaching groups that have traditionally been difficult to reach. Read more.
