FIJI
The Adventist message first came to Fiji in 1890, but many parts of the islands are still unentered. Some eight Global Mission projects are currently underway. One such project is at Lagi Bay on the far northeastern coast of Vanua Levu. This part of Fiji is very isolated and until recently was only accessible by boat. Today a rough bush road penetrates the jungle and runs right to Lagi village where a new group of Adventist believers was started by Global Mission pioneer Eremasi Levi. Excited by their newfound faith, several families of new believers built their own little chapel. Then came Cyclone Tomas. Powerful winds smashed through the jungle and damaged the new church. Fortunately, all the sheets of roofing iron stayed intact, and the members will be able to rebuild their little chapel in the bush. Please pray for Global Mission pioneers like Eremasi and little groups of struggling believers in the islands of the Pacific. They might be thousands of miles from civilization, but they are letting their light shine for Jesus. MAY
MALAYSIA
On the island of Penang, Malaysia, there are about 1.4 million Chinese people. This past spring Global Mission pioneer Samuel Wang held a public series of meetings here. Samuel won his audience’s respect by finding creative ways to relate his nightly sermons to their Chinese heritage. Each night between 100 and 150 eager community members showed up. About 150 local church members attended as well to help out with the meetings. The church members also helped through prayer, personal invitations and by befriending as many new people who came as possible. Thanks to the church members prayers and hard work, more community members attended the last night than the opening night. Now the group is actively planning their next step. Please pray with us that the church members in Penang will continue to work in harmony with God’s revealed will as they work together to gather in a rich harvest for the Lord. JUNE
REFUGEES IN THE UNITED STATES
224. That’s the number of languages spoken in Los Angeles according to a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. 170. That’s the number of languages spoken in New York City, according to city records. In fact the same report claims 36 percent of New Yorkers were born outside the United States. Some of these language groups are the same ones we’re struggling to reach in remote parts of the world. The reality is that the world is coming to us; we’re not just going to it. Currently the Adventist Church has a number of outreach projects for foreign-born people in the United States and other countries where there are already established Adventist congregations. When people are new to a country they are often more receptive to the gospel. This is a tremendous opportunity to tell the world about Christ Jesus. But it’s also a challenge. We must find the right way to reach out. Please keep this opportunity and challenge in your prayers Also please pray for a new ministry that is just beginning in Spokane, Washington, in the United States for Iraqi refugees. An Adventist who grew up in Iraq recently learned that 150 refugees will arrive soon and plans to start an outreach ministry to help them. Global Mission opportunities sometimes pop up in unforeseen ways. To contribute to Global Mission work where it is needed most, please support Fund # 5020.
